THE ESSENTIAL MINGUS BIG BAND: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat

This jazz standard was composed by Charles Mingus, written as an elegy for saxophonist Lester Young, who died two months before its first recording session on the album Mingus Ah Um. The name of the composition was inspired by Lester’s broad-rimmed pork pie hat. The song has been recorded by many jazz musicians throughout the years.

On this version performed by the Mingus Big Band we can listen to an outstanding Seamus Blake on tenor saxophone.
